Every Monday I project a short reading on my whiteboard, written in Spanish (the very first weeks of Spanish 1 it is in English). For beginning learners, even a simple paragraph can seem overwhelming; by guiding them through ways to break it down, (read it a sentence at a time, look for cognates, don't have to know the meaning of every word...) they become more comfortable with reading and are able to earn higher grades on the assessments.
As the year progresses, or with the higher levels, I have them create their own questions and ask their neighbors.
